About the Event<\/h3>\n

Described as \u201ca pianist whose probing, incisive, and deeply considered performances are consistently challenging and rewarding\u201d (<\/span>San Francisco Classical Voice<\/span><\/i>), Johnathan Biss is a world<\/span>–<\/span> renowned pianist who channels his deep musical curiosity into performances and projects in the concert hall and beyond.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Biss\u2019s endeavors represent his complete approach to music-making<\/span>,<\/span> and desire to imbue audiences with his own passion for music. Previous projects include<\/span>d<\/span> an exploration of composers’ \u201clate style\u201d in various concert programs at Carnegie Hall, the Barbican Centre, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, and San Francisco Performances. He also gave master<\/span> classes at Carnegie Hall and published the Kindle <\/span>s<\/span>S<\/span>ingle <\/span>Coda <\/span><\/i>on the topic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This program pairs one of the last three sonatas of Schubert\u2014works which address the mysteries of life and death, and do so unflinchingly and with astonishing beauty\u2014with a newly commissioned work by a composer of color. The intention is not to suggest a particular connection between the old and new works<\/span>;<\/span>:<\/span> it is to show that one can immerse oneself in the greatest music of the past and work to ensure that the present and future are more just, and richer for it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
